Matthijs Koene (1977) concluded his studies Cum Laude in 2001 at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. During his studies, Matthijs  developed a new technique that allowed him to amalgamate the very different tones, articulations and dynamics specifically used in classical and modern music. His vision and playing style are at the highest technical level. This combined with his musical expressiveness pushes the pan flute’s boundaries. Up to now, more than 100 works have been written for him. Besides Verso Matthijs plays in two different ensembles: Black Pencil. The ensembles gives concerts world wide on presigious festivals and concert halls worldwide. The ensemble consists of recorders, panpipes, Viola, accordeon and Percussion.  In the Ensemble Zerafin the Chinese erhu, Syrian qanun, Armenian duduk and the pan flute melt together with viola da gamba, double bass, percussion and voice. As a soloist Matthijs played new and existing concertos with I Barocchisti , the Riga Sinfonietta and the Holland Baroque Society. In 2017 and 2018 will premier pieces by Calliope Tsoupaki and Klaas de Vries with the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2005, Matthijs Koene is a Panflute professor at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

I am extremely passionate about working with composers, other instrumentalists and artists from other disciplines in order to develop my instrument and its repertoire. It is for this reason I feel extremely connected with the work of the Annelie de Man foundation. I believe the contemporary harpsichord and the recorder share many similarities in the difficulties of developing our instruments. I am really excited to be a part of the organisation and help its development for the future.”

She always remained my professor, but she especially was that wonderful colleague and partner in the adventure of the contemporary harpsichord. Her enthusiastic way of teaching and especially her vast knowledge concerning her profession were instrumental for important decisions I made in my musical life and which I now enjoy so much. Thanks to the Foundation Annelie de Man, her work will continue to inspire others.”
